2014 APRIL PAD CHALLENGE DAY 23: Carolina Baby (Poem)

Carolina Baby

Sometimes,
I just want to go back home.
I’d have to pick one though,
my roots are spread out
all over the state.
The homes aren’t there anymore,
of course.
Things aren’t the same.
People have grown up,
moved on
and passed away.
The towns have changed
torn down and rebuilt.
It’s just a pang
I get with the fond memories.
The bad ones?
Well, I try to forget.
I try…

They say home is where the heart is
and my heart is also
all over the place.
We were all together for a time,
then left for life
to live –
to make new memories.
I had to displace myself,
like the rest,
to learn
to make my own home
from scratch,
with regrets and hopes,
for the tomorrows
come todays
and maybe to someday
have places
to go back to.
