Built to Last

Built to Last

How do we know
we’re in love

Is it a deep longing
a strong knowing
a profound mutual respect

Or could it be
that we
spent so much time
learning what love isn’t

When that doesn’t show up
we are relieved
by peace
let our defenses slip
and trip
into something
we never want to release

I think
single file
our experiences
with love and anti-love
march down the aisle
and before we know it
twenty years of
a lifetime commitment
has passed

We no longer have to ask
we just know
we built us to last

Shoe Fly

SHOE FLY by CharlyChive
SHOE FLY by CharlyChive

Shoe Fly

A lonely sandal
lost in the dunes
far from the water’s edge
makes me wonder
how one foot can tread on
naked
while the other’s still dressed

until I recall
things I have lost
without a clue
as to
where they went

Why is my mind so bent
on this familiar event

Maybe this shoe
just slipped away
It was time for it to go
to grow
It has evolved
adapted to its environment
is happy doing its thing

And some day
its former partner
will fly away
too

only for them
to meet again
in the end

Starship Landing Strip

Starship Landing Strip

With deep respect to those
who have come and gone
it just goes to show
the circle grows
Nothing remains the same
for long

It matters not
how you make your name
the sound
the soul
the years of gold
remain

From the Summer of Love
that I was a part of
I chased the White Rabbit
into oncoming traffic
found Somebody to Love
and with a conjoined shrug
We Built this City
on rock and roll
ditties

To me
you’ll always just be

Airplane

Epiphanic Catharsis

Catharsis by WorkOfFart

Epiphanic Catharsis

The so-called cool kids were mean
gnawed away at my self-esteem
They made up excuses to bait
and spread rumors twisted with hate

My desire to fit in was fleeting
I should have seen through their sheeting
was dubbed public enemy uncool
and threatened with beatings at school

Now that I’m grown, I can see
they turned out no better than me
Although when our lives rearranged
I learned and they haven’t changed

So I wasn’t cursed, I was blessed
to fall in with a dicier mess
We each had our day with the popular games
now none of us remembers their names

Time Out

Time Out

Not always a where
but sometimes a when
whatever it is
It’s not happening then

At first crack of dawn
quiet in the castle
everyone’s sleeping
there isn’t much hassle

Except for the dog
who goes out and comes back
occasional sneezing
paid dues to a lilac

Coffee is brewing
I get the first cup
maybe the second
before anyone’s up

Two hours’ hide away
time on my hands
to ease out of asleep
‘fore the mothership lands
